Abstract

This study examined the constraints and prospects of public enterprises in Nigeria, with particular reference to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). The study was undertaken due to persistent challenges in Nigeria’s electricity transmission system, such as frequent grid instability and unreliable power supply. The objectives of the study were to examine the effect of funding and maintenance on grid stability, assess the impact of transmission constraints on electricity supply reliability, and evaluate the influence of reforms and investments on service delivery in TCN. A survey research design was adopted for the study. The population comprised eighty (80) staff of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) region, Kano State. Using the Krejcie and Morgan sample size determination table, a sample size of sixty-six (66) respondents was selected through stratified random sampling to ensure adequate representation of management, technical, and administrative staff. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using frequency and percentage tables. The findings revealed that inadequate funding and poor maintenance significantly contribute to frequent grid instability at TCN. The study also found that transmission constraints such as aging infrastructure, vandalism, and limited transmission capacity negatively affect the reliability of electricity supply in Nigeria. In addition, reforms and investments were found to have a significant positive effect on service delivery, although the improvements remain insufficient. The study concluded that while TCN is critical to Nigeria’s power sector, its performance is constrained by financial, technical, and institutional challenges. The study therefore recommended increased funding, improved maintenance practices, sustained reforms, and enhanced protection of transmission infrastructure.
