PHYTOCHEMICALS SCREENING AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF PSIDIUM GUAJAVA( GUAVA ) LEAVES EXTRACT
Abstract
This study investigated the phytochemical screening and antioxidant activity of
Psidium guajava (guava) leaves extracts. The aim of the research was to identify
the major phytochemical constituents present in the leaves and to evaluate their
antioxidant potential.
Fresh leaves of Psidium guajava were collected, washed, dried, and pulverized
into powder. The powdered sample was extracted using suitable solvents.
Standard qualitative methods were employed to screen for the presence of
phytochemicals such as alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, glycosides, and
phenolic compounds. The antioxidant activity of the extracts was determined
using appropriate in-vitro assays.
The results revealed the presence of important bioactive compounds, especially
flavonoids, tannins, and phenolics, which are known for their antioxidant
properties. The extracts demonstrated significant antioxidant activity, indicating
their ability to scavenge free radicals.
The findings of this study support the traditional use of Psidium guajava leaves in
herbal medicine and suggest that the plant is a good natural source of
antioxidants. Further studies are recommended to isolate and characterize the
active compounds and to evaluate their pharmacological potentials.
