THE IMPACT OF SAFETY MANAGEMENT ON JOB PERFORMANCE AMONG EMPLOYEES IN SOME SELECTED HOTELS IN KANO (A CASE STUDY OF TAHIR GUEST PALACE, NI’IMAH HOTEL, AND SARINA HOTEL)
Abstract
Safety management is a critical component of organizational effectiveness, particularly in the hotel industry where employees are exposed to various occupational hazards arising from daily operational activities. This study examined the impact of safety management on job performance among employees in selected hotels in Kano, with specific reference to Tahir Guest Palace, Ni’imah Hotel, and Sarina Hotel. The objectives of the study were to assess the existing safety management practices in the selected hotels, determine the relationship between safety management and employee job performance, and identify challenges affecting effective safety management implementation. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, and data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to employees across different departments of the selected hotels. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical tools. Findings from the study revealed that effective safety management practices—such as regular safety training, provision of protective equipment, clear safety policies, and prompt response to hazards—have a significant positive influence on employee job performance, reflected in increased efficiency, reduced workplace accidents, improved morale, and higher commitment to work. However, challenges such as inadequate safety training, limited management commitment, and insufficient safety resources were also identified. The study concluded that safety management plays a vital role in enhancing employee job performance in the hotel industry. It therefore recommended that hotel management should strengthen safety policies, invest in continuous safety training, and promote a strong safety culture to improve employee performance and overall organizational productivity.
