DETERMINATION OF PROXIMATE ANALYSIS, MINERALS AND PHYTOCHEMICAL CONSTITUENT OF TELFAIRIA OCCIDENTALIS (FLUTED PUMPKIN)
Abstract
Telfairiaoccidentalis are extremely valuable plant with economic, nutritional and potential therapeutic values. They both have diverse ethnomedicinal uses in Nigeria and worldwide thus, making them therapeutic beneficial to humans. The objective of this project was to determine the nutritional and mineral composition of the plants. Proximate compositions of the leaves were determined AOAC conventional method while mineral composition was determined using acid digestion and flame photometric method. The result of proximate analysis shows that Telfairiaoccidentalis (fluted pumpkin) exhibits the higher levels of moisture (47.2%), crude fiber (12.9%), and ash content (8.1%) while Telfairiaoccidentalis (Ugu leaves) shows high amount of crude protein (16.9%) and carbohydrates (13.1%).
