LIBRARIANS AWARENESS AND USE OF INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES IN SELECTED ACADEMIC LIBRARIES IN ONDO STATE
Abstract
The continued survival and use of Academic libraries in the present period depend on expanding
and modernizing library and information services. The study examined awareness and utilization
of innovative technologies by librarians in selected academic libraries in Ondo state. The
objectives of the study were to examine the level of awareness of innovative technologies among
librarians, identify the types of innovative technologies used in academic libraries, to investigate
the factors that influence the adoption of innovative technologies in academic libraries, to identify
the challenges faced by librarians in adopting and using innovative technologies and to propose
strategies for improving the awareness, adoption, and effective use of innovative technologies in
academic libraries.
The study employed a descriptive survey research design, and the population comprised of 60
respondents in three selected academic libraries in Ondo State (AAUA library, FUTA library and
Rufus Giwa Polytechnic Library, Owo). A self-designed questionnaire was used for data
collection, while the data collected were analyzed using simple percentage, frequency counts, and
tables.
Findings of the study revealed that librarians in selected academic libraries in Ondo State have a
high level of awareness of innovative technologies, but limited availability and usage of these
technologies due to inadequate funding, insufficient infrastructure, lack of staff training and
resistance to change. Despite these challenges, librarians maximize available resources, and
awareness significantly influences technology adoption.
The study concludes that addressing challenges through improved infrastructure, funding, training
and institutional support is crucial for libraries to enhance technological capabilities and improve
services ultimately contributing to academic success. One key recommendation is that academic
libraries should invest in robust ICT infrastructure and systems to improve access to innovative
technologies including updating library hardware, software and networks.
