THE IMPACT OF CITIZENS PARTICIPATION IN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA (A CASE STUDY OF IDAH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF KOGI STATE)
Abstract
This research work is based on the impact of mass mobilization of citizen participation in community development (a case study of Idah local government area of kogi state). The fact remains that the idea of embarking on community development is to enhance the standard of living of rural dwellers both economically and socially. In view of the findings, it is incumbent on us to suggest and recommend possible solutions which will help solve most of the problems of community development in Idah Local Government in particular and Nigeria in general. The involvement of the rural dwellers in the planning and execution of community development programmes and projects should always be given adequate priority. This is necessary in view of the fact that most people in the community would respond to and participate actively in the projects they initiated rather than those projects or programmes imposed on them which they may not need. Government at all levels should ensure adequate provisions of resources needed for development projects. Finally, the Local Government should increase the remunerations and emoluments of its employees, so that they should not leave Local Government in search of foreign jobs. The federal government should also assist them financially in order to stimulate economic development in the rural areas.
