ANALYSIS OF GOVERNMENT POLICIES ON POVERTY ALEVATION IN NIGERIA A CASE STUDY OF ATIBA LOCAL GOVERNMENT, OYO STATE.
Abstract
This study examined the analysis of government policies on poverty alleviation in Nigeria, using Atiba Local Government Area of Oyo State as a case study. Poverty remains one of the major socio-economic challenges confronting Nigeria despite various government interventions aimed at reducing its prevalence. Over the years, successive governments have introduced several poverty alleviation policies and programmes such as the National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP), National Directorate of Employment (NDE), Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT), Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP), and other social intervention schemes. However, the effectiveness of these policies in improving the living standards of citizens at the grassroots level remains a subject of concern.
The study aimed to assess the extent to which government poverty alleviation policies have impacted the socio-economic well-being of residents in Atiba Local Government Area. Specifically, the study examined the various poverty alleviation policies implemented in the area, evaluated their effectiveness, identified challenges affecting their implementation, and suggested measures for improving policy outcomes. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study, while data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to selected respondents in the study area. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency tables, percentages, and mean scores.
Findings from the study revealed that although government poverty alleviation policies have contributed to improving access to financial support, employment opportunities, and social welfare services, their overall impact has been limited due to factors such as corruption, poor implementation, inadequate funding, political interference, lack of proper monitoring, and low awareness among beneficiaries. The study concluded that government poverty alleviation policies in Nigeria have not fully achieved their intended objectives at the grassroots level, particularly in Atiba Local Government Area.
The study recommended that government should strengthen policy implementation mechanisms, ensure transparency and accountability in fund management, improve monitoring and evaluation systems, increase public awareness, and promote community participation in poverty alleviation programmes to enhance their effectiveness and sustainability.
