PROXIMATE, MINERALS AND PHYTOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF LEPTADANIA HASTATA LEAVES
Abstract
The main aim of this project is to determination of proximate, minerals and phytochemical constituents of L. hastata leaves obtained from Kano Municipal. The leaf of L. hastata leaves were obtained washed thoroughly with distilled water and air-dried in a shade for two weeks, then cut into pieces and grinded into powder using a sterile pestle and mortar under laboratory condition. Distilled water and ethanol was used as solvents of extraction of the active components of the leaves using maceration method. Phytochemical screening, proximate analysis were conducted using conventional method while mineral analysis was conducted by means of AAS. The result of phytochemical screening showed that the leaf extract contain alkaloid, flavonoid tannin, Saponins, phenol, steroid and terpenoid. The proximate analysis showed that the L. hastata leaf extract contains an adequate amount of food substances. The result showed that the analysis of mineral composition of L. hastata leaf in this study confirmed the presence of both trace (zinc, manganese, iron and copper) and major (potassium, sodium phosphorous, and magnesium) elements. It is concluded that the leaf contained phytochemicals and mineral elements and thus provide a basic rationale for the use of the plant as herbal medicine and food substances
