Abstract

The study investigated the availability and utilization of electronic resources in special libraries in Kogi State, Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population of the study comprised 30 library staff from the selected special libraries in Kogi State. All 30 library staff within the selected libraries were drawn as the sample using the Census Sampling technique, ensuring a comprehensive assessment. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and observation checklist, designed to evaluate both the availability of electronic resources and their usage by library staff and users. Data analysis was carried out using the mean scores, providing quantitative insights into the trends observed. The findings reveal that the electronic resources available in these special libraries include academic journals, e-books, online databases, and digital repositories, which are crucial for academic research and information dissemination. However, the study identified significant challenges hindering the optimal utilization of these resources. These challenges include poor power supply, inadequate ICT infrastructure, limited access to high-speed internet, lack of training for library staff on the effective use of electronic resources, and financial constraints that limit the acquisition of up-to-date digital content. The study further highlights the implications of these challenges on library services, noting that the underutilization of electronic resources impacts the overall efficiency of information delivery in these libraries. To address these issues, the study recommends several strategic interventions, including the provision of reliable power supply, investment in ICT infrastructure, continuous training programs for library staff, and increased funding to support the acquisition and maintenance of electronic resources. Additionally, the study suggests that library management should collaborate with stakeholders to ensure the sustainability and expansion of electronic resources in special libraries. The study concludes that while electronic resources are available in special libraries in Kogi State, their utilization is significantly hampered by infrastructural and financial challenges.
