Abstract

This study investigates the effect of sisal fibre reinforcement on the compressive strength of concrete with the aim of promoting sustainable construction practices in Nigeria. Concrete specimens were prepared with fibre contents of 0% (control), 30%, 60%, and 90% by weight of cement and tested at 7, 14, and 28 days. Results indicate that moderate fibre incorporation enhanced compressive strength compared to conventional concrete, with 30% sisal fibre recording the highest strength of 23.1 N/mm² at 28 days. Similarly, 60% fibre content produced competitive results (20.2 N/mm²), demonstrating the ability of sisal to improve stress distribution and crack resistance. However, at 90% fibre, compressive strength decreased to 18.2 N/mm², attributed to poor workability, fibre agglomeration, and increased voids. These findings suggest that sisal fibre, when used in optimum proportions, enhances the mechanical performance of concrete while promoting eco-friendly and cost-effective construction. The study concludes that sisal fibre offers a sustainable reinforcement material and recommends further research and standardization for wider adoption.
