AN INVESTIGATION INTO MATERIALWASTAGEAND THEIRRECYCLING PROCESSONCONSTRUCTION SITE.
Abstract
The construction industry plays a vital role in economic development but is also one of
the largest contributors to material wastage, which often results in increased project costs,
environmental degradation, and resource depletion. This study investigate material
wastage on construction sites with specific emphasis on the types of material wastage,
causes of material wastage and the method of recycling employed. Data were collected
through questionnaires administered to construction professionals, supported by
secondary source from relevant literature's and journals. The findings revealed that the
common type of wastage on construction sites include concrete, blocks, nails, stone. The
major causes identified is theft. Furthermore the recycling processes adopted to minimize
such losses include sorting, segregation, crushing and reuse. The research concludes that
effective material management, structured recycling programs and increased awareness
are vital to reducing material and promoting sustainable construction practices. It
recommended training and capacity building, adoption of recycling and reuse practice,
strengthened policy and regulatory framework, use of technology amd innovation,
effective supervision and monitoring, future research into mainstream construction
practice to promote sustainable development
