Abstract

ABSTRACT The dimension of the culvert was chosen to suit its location on site and is designed as a single cell with a total length of 10.5 m and a total width of 1.2 m in-to-in, 1.5 m centre to centre span with its vertical side walls being 1.5 m centre to centre but with in-to-in 1.2 m height. The thickness of the culvert is 0.3 m for all its structural element members. Box culvert is a monolithic rigid frame and has been analysed as such using moment distribution method. It can be seen from the analysis of culvert loads under cases of culvert empty and culvert flowing full that the worst condition occurs when the culvert is empty. The worst condition of moment and shear occurs at the bottom slab. However, calculations revealed that the area of reinforcement obtained is less than the minimum required so nominal reinforcement was adopted for all the members. In the light of the foregoing, the culvert has been designed for the ultimate limit state with the application of appropriate factors of safety. And having satisfied all necessary checks, the proposed culvert is fit for construction and is sure to perform optimally under the worst condition.
