GEOTECHNICAL MAPPING FOR INFORMED URBAN PLANNING, ENHANCING INFRASTRUCTURE SUSTAINABILITY AND RESILIENCE IN KANO (A CASE STUDY OF PARTS OF KANO METROPOLITAN, KUMBOTSO, AND TARAUNI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREAS)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Soil literate and clay are problematic geo-materials characterized by high plasticity,
and clay volumetric changes, and low bearing capacity, which often result in
pavement distress and foundation failure. This study evaluates the determination of
bearing capacity of literate soil potential applied individually and energetically, on
literate soil sourced from Tarauni and Kumbotso local government area in Kano
State, Nigeria
.Laboratory tests were conducted on the natural soil samples in accordance with
British Standards (BS 1377 and BS 1924) and AASHTO specifications. The
engineering properties evaluated included Atterberg limits, compaction
characteristics, linear shrinkage, and California Bearing Ratio (CBR).
Results showed that the natural soil was highly plastic (PI = 15%), classified as A-
2-4 under the AASHTO system, and exhibited a low CBR value of 50.3%, confirming
its unsuitability as a construction sub-base.
