Abstract

The study investigates the design innovative solutions for waste generation and enhanced recycling in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Borno State. The study aims to identify the solution for waste generation and enhanced recycling in Maiduguri. The study also aims to design innovative solutions for waste management and recycling practices that can be adopted in Maiduguri. After reviewing the current state of waste generation, commonly practiced solution for waste generation such as burial, open-air burning, and open dumping, were found to be ineffective and detrimental to public health and the environment. The population of the study consists of 100 households, 20 businesses, and 10 industrial facilities in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council. The results of the study show that the current waste generation rates in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council are high, with an average of 1.5 kg of waste per person per day. The study also found that the majority of households (80%) do not have a waste management system in place, and that most businesses (70%) do not have a recycling program. The study identified several challenges faced by households, businesses, and industries in the council, including lack of infrastructure, inadequate funding, and lack of awareness about waste management practices. The study recommends that the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council develop a comprehensive waste management plan that includes waste segregation, collection, and disposal. The study also recommends that the council establish a recycling program that encourages households, businesses, and industries to participate in recycling activities. Finally, the study recommends that the council provide education and awareness programs to households, businesses, and industries on the importance of waste management and recycling practices
