PRAGMATIC ACTS ANALYSIS OF POLITICAL SONGS ON PETER OBI'S PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This research work titled “Pragmatic Acts Analysis of Political Songs on Peter Obi's Presidential
Campaign” analyses the pragmatic acts in political songs used during Peter Obi’s 2023 campaign,
employing Mey’s Pragmatic Act Theory as a framework. Using a descriptive qualitative approach,
five campaign songs were purposively selected from YouTube and analyzed to identify their
linguistic and contextual features. Findings reveal that these songs employ testimonial, praise,
condemnation, and mockery to influence political discourse and mobilize supporters. The study
highlights the strategic role of political songs in persuasion and identity formation. It recommends
further research on the digital impact and audience reception of political songs in Nigerian
elections.
