PHYTOCHEMICAL PROPERTIES AND ANTI-BACTERIAL ACTIVITIES OF METHANOLIC ROOT EXTRACT OF MORINDA LUCIDA ON SELECTED CLINICAL BACTERIA ISOLATES
Abstract
This study investigated the phytochemical properties and antibacterial activities of the methanolic root extract of Morinda lucida against selected bacterial isolates. The methanolic root extract of Morinda lucida demonstrated the presence of several bioactive phytochemicals, notably alkaloids, tannins, saponins, polyphenols, and glycosides, which are known for their antimicrobial properties. The phytochemical screening of Morinda lucida methanolic root extract revealed the presence of alkaloids, tannins, saponins, polyphenols, and glycosides, while flavonoids, steroids, and terpenoids showed inconsistent results between. The antimicrobial screening demonstrated a dose-dependent inhibition of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, with higher concentrations of the extract (60 mg/mL) producing more significant zones of inhibition, especially against E. coli (6 mm) compared to S. aureus (3 mm). However, the standard control (likely an antibiotic) showed significantly higher activity, with 12 mm and 19 mm zones of inhibition for S. aureus and E. coli, respectively. These findings are consistent with earlier studies which reported the antimicrobial and phytochemical profiles of Morinda lucida and similar medicinal plants
