ASSESSMENT OF HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY OF DUTSIN-MA DAM FLOOD PLAIN SOILS, KATSINA STATE, NIGERIA.
Abstract
This study assessed the hydraulic conductivity of flood plain soils surrounding Dutsin-Ma Dam in Katsina State, Nigeria. Hydraulic conductivity is a vital soil property that determines the movement of water through soil pores and influences irrigation efficiency, drainage, and crop productivity. Soil samples were collected from different locations within the flood plain at varying depths and analyzed using standard laboratory procedures. The constant head permeameter method was employed to determine hydraulic conductivity values. Results showed variations in conductivity across sampling points due to differences in soil texture, structure, organic matter content, and compaction. Sandy loam soils exhibited higher conductivity compared to clayey soils. The findings revealed that the soils are moderately suitable for irrigation farming with adequate drainage characteristics. The study recommends proper soil management practices such as organic matter incorporation and controlled irrigation to improve water retention and reduce erosion risks.
