Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examines the influence of drug abuse on the academic performance of Yusuf Maitama Sule university students. The increasing prevalence of drug use among young adults has raised concerns about its potential impact on various aspects of their lives, particularly their academic achievements. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, utilizing both quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews, to assess the frequency and types of drugs used, as well as the perceived effects on students' focus, memory, attendance, and overall academic success. The findings reveal a significant correlation between drug abuse and decreased academic performance, with students reporting difficulties in concentration, reduced cognitive abilities, and lower academic motivation. Additionally, the study identifies various socio-cultural and environmental factors that contribute to drug abuse among university students, including peer pressure, stress, and accessibility to substances. The research concludes with recommendations for educational institutions to implement comprehensive support systems, such as counseling services and awareness programs, to mitigate the negative effects of drug abuse and enhance student well-being and academic performance
