THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE ELECTRIC BIKE ENERGY STORAGE MODULE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This project presents the design and construction of an electric bike energy storage module using a 48 V, 20 Ah lithium-ion battery pack configured from 18650 cells. The study focuses on developing a reliable and efficient power source for electric mobility, suitable for Nigeria’s environmental and infrastructural condition. The energy storage system was designed using a 13S8P configuration, with a Battery Management System (BMS) to monitor voltage, current, and temperature. The system was tested under various load conditions using a 500 W brushless DC motor to assess performance, range, and safety. Results showed an average efficiency of 90%, stable voltage behavior, and a range of 35–40 km per full charge. The findings confirm that lithium-ion technology provides a more durable, lightweight, and environmentally friendly solution than conventional lead-acid batteries. This work demonstrates the feasibility of locally fabricated lithium-ion energy storage systems and supports the transition toward sustainable electric mobility in Nigeria
