A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF TWO DIAGNOSTIC METHODS (MICROSCOPY TEST AND RAPID DIAGNOSTIC TEST KIT) IN THE DIAGNOSIS OF MALARIA PARASITE IN DUTSIN-MA GENERAL HOSPITAL, KATSINA STATE, NIGERIA.
Abstract
Management of malaria requires prompt diagnosis by microscopy, Rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) or other available tools. in detection of malaria parasite among different age groups. The study was conducted on 110 patients with the symptoms of malaria infection. Blood samples were collected and screened for malaria parasites microscopically and using RDT. The result shows prevalence of malaria through microscopy (35.71%) and significantly higher than in RDT (0.35%), considering microscopy as the gold standard, blood rapid diagnostic exhibited high specificity (92.5%) and low sensitivity (87.5%) with positive and negative predictive values of 97.9% and 64.9% respectively. 56.2% respectively. The routine microscopy test demonstrated a superior sensitivity compared to first response RDT (blood and urine) kit However RDT kits was a useful tool in diagnosing individuals suspected to show high degree of disease spectrum. Therefore, RDI kits should be encouraged in primary health care centers.
