Abstract

This manuscript will question the consequences of Oyo State public health intervention regarding the waste disposal and pollution process amidst traders in the Ibadan North local government of Ibadan. The motivation behind this question is the long-standing issues related to illegal disposal of waste, poor hygiene, and the general concern of environmental pollution that has not been addressed yet even as development communication programs strive to reduce the problem within the urban marketplace. We implemented the cross-sectional survey research design and sampled 265 traders in the Oja-Oba Market and responded to with the use of a structured questionnaire. The analysis was furthered using the descriptive statistics methods, which included frequency distribution and percentages. The evidence produced by the empirical study suggests that the traders have a very high level of awareness about the health campaign; most of the traders testified to receiving the campaign messages through radio, personal outreach through community emissaries and print media. Also, the campaign seems to have helped bring about successful transformation in the waste disposal activities, levels of hygienic activities and the use of sanitation facilities among traders. However, lexical obstacles, inaccessible campaign resources, illiteracy of traders and inconsistent follow up had been pointed out as major barrier to complete compliance. In general, traders considered the campaign to be fruitful they referred to the increased sensitisation, the use of the local language messages, the increase in waste containers, and the improved compliance with sanitation laws. The researcher hypothesizes that development communication programs have the capacity of promoting environmental sanitation but the programmes should be carefully developed and maintained. There is therefore an imminent need of relentless community enlightenment, development of clear communication policies and a proactive cooperation involving the governmental authorities and market unions to promote the management of waste and pollution in Ibadan North Local Government Area.
