Abstract

The study investigates the antimicrobial activity of Doum palm (Hyphaene thebaica) extract against specific fungal pathogens, particularly Candida albicans. Doum palm, native to northern Nigeria, is recognized for its edible fruit rich in essential nutrients. Despite its traditional use in African medicine, its efficacy as an antifungal agent has not been thoroughly explored. This research aims to fill this gap by evaluating the extract's antimicrobial properties, determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and identifying bioactive compounds responsible for its activity. The methodology involved collecting fresh Doum palm fruits, extracting bioactive compounds using water, and testing the extract's effectiveness through in vitro assays. The results indicate that Doum palm extracts exhibit significant antifungal activity against Candida albicans, suggesting potential therapeutic applications. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of various bioactive compounds known for their antimicrobial properties. This study contributes to the understanding of Doum palm's medicinal potential and supports the need for further research into its applications in developing novel antifungal therapies providing a promising approach to addressing the growing concerns antifungal resistance.
