PROPOSED TRADO-MODERN ARCHITECTURAL APPROACH IN THE REDESIGN OF KANTA MUSEUM ARGUNGU, KEBBI STATE.
Abstract
ABSTRACT
TRADO-MODERN ARCHITECTURAL APPROACH IN THE REDESIGN OF KANTA
MUSEUM, ARGUNGU, KEBBI STATE, NIGERIA.
This research addresses the pressing challenge of preserving cultural heritage while enhancing
the functional relevance of the Kanta Museum, a historic palace-turnedmuseum in Argungu,
Kebbi State. Confronted with structural deterioration, outdated infrastructure, and dwindling
visitor engagement, the study proposes a “Trado-Modern” redesign that fuses Hausa-Fulani
architectural traditions with contemporary design strategies. Employing a qualitative case
study approach—comprising site documentation, stakeholder interviews with local artisans,
and literature review—the research identifies key traditional elements for preservation, such
as tubali mud construction, Hoto decorative motifs, and courtyard spatial logic. It further
integrates modern interventions including stabilized earth blocks for structural resilience,
passive cooling systems, universal accessibility, and augmented reality (AR) features to enrich
visitor experience. A culturally grounded design blueprint was developed using Revit
simulations and iterative community feedback, offering a replicable model for heritagecentered
museum revitalization
