SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF SCHIFF BASE AND COBALT (II) COMPLEX DERIVED FROM O-HYDROXYACETOPHENONE AND ETHYLENEDIAMINE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study focuses on the synthesis and characterization of Schiff base and their cobalt (II) complex derived from o-hydroxyacetophenone and ethylenediamine. The synthesis involved a condensation reaction between the aldehyde and the amine, resulting in the formation of a Schiff base. And the cobalt (ll) complex was synthesized by complexation reaction between the synthesized Schiff base and Cobalt (ll) complex the resulting compounds were characterized using various analytical techniques, including Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility measurements, and solubility tests. FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of key functional groups, such as the imine (C=N) and hydroxyl (O-H) groups, essential for coordination chemistry. Magnetic susceptibility results indicated significant paramagnetism in the cobalt (II) complex, suggesting the presence of unpaired electrons that enhance its potential biological applications. Solubility tests revealed that the Schiff base was soluble in polar solvents like DMSO and ethanol, but insoluble in water, indicating their organic nature. Conductivity measurement helps to assess the electrolytic nature of the synthesized compounds by determining the ability to conduct electricity. These findings suggest that the synthesized Schiff base and cobalt (II) complexes possess promising structural and functional properties, with potential applications in catalysis and antimicrobial activities. Future studies will explore their biological efficacy and potential therapeutic applications.
