THE EFFECTS OF CLASS ROOM INTERACTION ON THE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE COURSES IN FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC ADO-EKITI

Abstract This study examined the effects of class room interaction on the teaching and learning of library and information science courses in Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti. Specifically, the study examined ascertain the level of frequency of classroom interaction among students in Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti, determine the factors influencing classroom interaction between students and teachers in Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti, investigated the effects of classroom interaction on students learning outcome in Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti, suggested measures to enhance classroom interaction during teaching and learning process in Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti.The study adopted descriptive survey design. The population of this study covered all the entire academic staffs and students and across all the faculties (schools) in federal polytechnic Ado-Ekiti in Ekiti State. The sample size of 110 respondents were selected using multi-stage sampling technique. This study employed the use of primary data to determine the effects of classroom interaction on the teaching and learning of library and information science courses in Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti. Data collected were analyzed statistically using descriptive statistics and simple linear regression. Through the analysis, it was revealed that the students interact with one another frequently and for different reasons such as academic, social, friendship and to become active in classroom. It was also revealed that the factors influencing classroom interaction between students and teachers in Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti teaching tools, style and method, instructor’s skills, class composition, learning environment and social inclusion. Also, it was discovered that there is a significant effect of classroom interaction on students learning outcome in Federal polytechnic, Ado Ekiti. Finally, it was discovered that the measures to enhance classroom interaction during teaching and learning process in Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti include; the adoption of flexible teaching system, giving of group academic activities to students, practice of interactive learning system, integration of research base knowledge and integration of meaning focused interaction. From the analysis, conducted it was established that a statistical relationship exists between classroom interaction and teaching and learning of library and information science courses in Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti.
