Abstract

This study examines the role of primary school teachers in promoting personal hygiene among pupils aged 6 to 12 years in Dala Local Government, Kano State. The purpose of the study is to investigate how teachers influence pupils’ hygiene practices, and the strategies used in promoting personal hygiene in schools. A descriptive survey design was adopted, and data were collected from selected primary schools using questionnaires and interviews. The study population consisted of primary school teachers and pupils, while a simple random sampling technique was employed to select participants. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts and percentages. The findings revealed that primary school teachers play a significant role in instilling hygiene practices among pupils through classroom teaching, demonstration, supervision, and provision of guidance. However, challenges such as inadequate teaching resources, poor sanitary facilities, and lack of support from parents hinder effective hygiene promotion. The study concludes that teachers are key agents in promoting personal hygiene but require better facilities, training, and support to achieve sustainable results. It is therefore recommended that government, stakeholders, and parents collaborate with schools to provide necessary resources, health education programs, and supportive environments for effective hygiene promotion among pupils.
