Abstract

This research study focuses on investigating the influence of social media slangs on English Language among Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA) undergraduates. The study employed the survey research method to sample the opinion of 364 AAUA undergraduates who make use of social media slangs using purposive sampling technique with structured questionnaire instrument of the study. Findings from the study revealed that AAUA students use social media abbreviations frequently. Also, the use of social media slangs among AAUA undergraduates influenced their usage of Standard English Language negatively. The researcher therefore recommends while AAUA undergraduates use social media slangs frequently, they should be mindful of its adverse effect on the long run and endeavor to reduce its usage to only rare situations where there is need to manage time.
