INCORPORATION OF TECHNOLOGY AS A STRATEGY FOR IMPROVING LEARNING OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN AFIJIO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, OYO
Abstract
Abstract
This study investigated the incorporation of technology as a strategic approach to
enhancing the teaching and learning of English Language in selected secondary
schools within Afijio Local Government Area of Oyo State, Nigeria. The research
examined the types of technological tools employed in classroom instruction, the
proficiency levels of teachers and students in utilizing these tools, the impact of
technology on students’ academic performance, and the challenges limiting its
effective integration. A descriptive survey design was adopted, and data were
collected through structured questionnaires administered to English Language
teachers and students. The findings revealed that while various technological tools
such as mobile applications, multimedia presentations, online platforms, and
social media were being utilized to support English Language instruction, their
use was inconsistent and more prevalent in private schools than public ones.
Students generally demonstrated higher levels of digital literacy compared to
teachers, many of whom lacked formal training in educational technology. The
study concluded that technology, when effectively and strategically implemented,
can play a transformative role in English Language education. It recommended
targeted teacher training, improved infrastructure, curriculum reform to embed
digital competencies, and stronger collaboration among stakeholders to ensure
sustainable and equitable access to educational technology across all schools. The
study further established that the integration of technology significantly enhanced
student engagement, comprehension, and overall academic performance in
English Language. However, several barriers such as inadequate infrastructure,
erratic electricity supply, limited internet access, and insufficient teacher training
were identified as major obstacles, particularly in public schools.
