Abstract

Mono azo acid dye (7-phenylazo-5-amino-2-naphthol-1-sulphonic acid) was obtained in good yield by a two-step synthesis starting from the diazotization of aniline with sodium nitrite to give an intermediate phenyl diazonium salt. The intermediate diazonium salt was coupled with J-acid (5-amino-2-naphthol-1-sulphonic acid) in the presence of ethanol. The melting points of the dye (7-phenylazo-5-amino-2-naphthol-1-sulphonic acid) was observed at 200 °C. The results of the FTIR revealed absorption bands at 3334 cm-1 (O-H stretching for alcohol), 3062 cm-1 (C-H stretching for aromatic), 1619; 1578; 1511 cm-1 (C=C stretching for aromatic), 1988; 1919 cm-1 (N=N stretching), 1744 cm-1 (C-O stretching for oxime) and the peak at 1274 cm-1 reveals C-N stretching. The FTIR results ascertained the functional groups present in the dye (7-phenylazo-5-amino-2-naphthol-1-sulphonic acid). The washness of the fabric was found to be 4-5, which indicated very good to excellent wash fastness result. Result of the light fastness test shows 7-8, which indicated very good to excellent light fastness test result.
