Abstract

The study appraises the electorate participation in local government election in Nigeria (a study of Oyo State). Local government elections are crucial to grassroots democracy and participatory governance; however, voter apathy, administrative inefficiencies, and political interference have significantly hindered effective participation at this level. The research explores the extent of voter turnout, the factors influencing electorate participation, and the role of the State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) in the electoral process. The research design adopted for the study was a descriptive survey design. The sample used consisted of eighty (80) respondents, representing various categories of adults across the Local Government was randomly selected using simple random sampling technique. The research instrument used was a researcher designed questionnaire that was adjudged valid and reliable by the supervisor for the purpose of the study for collecting the required data. The data collected were analysed using frequency counts, simple percentages, and mean scores to interpret the demographic data and responses to research questions. A benchmark mean of 0.5 was used to determine the acceptability of responses. The findings revealed that; demographic characteristics such as age, gender, marital status, religion, and region significantly influence voting preferences and political behavior. Political parties and electoral institutions significantly impact voter turnout; political parties that have active grassroots structures and transparent candidateselection processes were seen to increase voter motivation. It concludes that voter turnout in local government elections in Oyo State is a complex phenomenon influenced by demographic realities, institutional effectiveness, civic knowledge, and political behavior. Based on the above findings, it was recommended that; The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC), civil society organizations, and the media should design and implement sustained voter education programs tailored to local communities, especially targeting youth, rural populations, and first-time voters. Stakeholders must intensify campaigns to educate citizens on the roles, responsibilities, and impact of local governments. Social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram should be used to inform and mobilize young voters, while radio and TV remain effective tools for reaching rural and older demographics.
