Abstract

Yam peelings are a by-product of yam processing, which have been found to have potential as an amendment for crude oil-impacted soil. The composition of yam peelings is rich in nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, as well as organic matter. The physiochemical analysis of crude oil impacted soil amended with yam peelings was carried out using the standard methods. The analysis was carried out on crude oil impacted soil, crude oil impacted soil that was allowed to undergo natural attenuation and crude oil impacted soil amended with yam peelings; while the physiochemical parameters of unpolluted soil served as control. The analysis was done within weekly intervals of yam peelings amendment. After eight weeks of yam peelings treatment, the following results were obtained; The pH of soil impacted with yam peelings amendment decreased from 6.87 to 6.05, Electical conductivity increased from 17.6 to 54.78 us/cm, Total Nitrogen increased from 0.09 to 16.41 mg/kg, Total phosphate increased from 0.34 to 4.32 mg/kg, Total organic content decreased from 6.5 to 2.8%, while Cation exchange decreased from 6.14 to to 3.82 Mcq/100g. The study showed that the presence of yam peelings influenced the changes observed in the various physiochemical parameters analysed. Therefore, yam peelings rich in organic matter contain compounds with bioactive properties that can influence soil physicochemical characteristic. Utilizing yam peelings as an amendment not only offers a sustainable solution for waste management but also presents an opportunity to harness their potential in remediating crude oil impacted soils.
