Abstract

Determination of physicochemical characteristics of stream, spring and borehole water, in Ikot Ntu, Ikot Eka Ikot and Ikot Esia in Oku Iboku community in Itu Local Government Area was done with standard analytical procedures to ascertain the status and safety for aquatic lives and human consumption. The water quality of Ikot Ntu natural stream recorded temperature of 25.60±0.002, pH (6.30±0.00), EC (17.0±0.001 μscm), salinity (0.00±0.00%), DO (11.50±0.004 mg/l), BOD (6.30±0.002 mg/l), COD (23.70±0.003 mg/l), acidity as CaCO3 (88.00±0.004 mg//l), alkalinity as CaCO3 (32.00±0.003 mg/l), TH (22.95±0.003 mg/l), TDS (8.52±0.001 mg/l), TSS (15.10±0.002 mg/l), SO42- (9.40±0.011 mg/l), NO3- (25.17±0.015 mg/l), PO43- (8.25±0.010 mg/l) and Cl- (15.45±0.003 mg/l), spring water recorded the temperature of 25.60±0.001, pH (6.50±0.002), EC (22.50±0.001 Μscm-1), salinity (0.00±0.00%), DO (12.15±0.002 mg/l), acidity as CaCO3 (80.00±0.003 mg/l), alkalinity as CaCO3 (40.00±0.001 mg/l), TH (17.12±0.002 mg/l), TDS (11.20±0.002 mg/l), TSS (6.15±0.001 mg/l), SO42- (8.17±0.020 mg/l), NO3- (28.49±0.18 mg/l), PO43- (9.11±0.009 mg/l), Cl- (12.30±0.002 mg/l). The borehole water recorded temperature of 26.4±0.003, pH (6.80±0.002), EC (17.72±0.004 μscm-1) salinity (0.00±0.00%), DO (10.30±0.003 mg/l), BOD (6.08±0.002 mg/l), COD (21.54±0.002 mg/l), acidity as CaCO3 (72.00±0.002 mg/l), alkalinity as CaCO3 (24.00±0.003 mg/l), TH (27.40±0.001 mg/l), TDS (8.90±0.002 mg/l), TSS (9.25±0.003 mg/l), SO42- (10.14±0.030 mg/l), NO3- (24.66±0.15 mg/l), PO43- (12.42±0.011 mg/l), Cl- (21.40±0.003 mg/l). Most of the parameters analysed were within WHO standard of water quality for drinking and survival of aquatic lives. Water quality parameters Ikot Eka Iko natural spring water recorded good water characteristics. The pH was less acidity. Contamination reduced microbial loads and good aeration nutrients in the water samples must have been influenced by fertilizer inputs from farming and mining activities along the spring banks.
