Abstract

This study examined the challenges of youth participation in Nigerian politics between 1999 and 2018, with emphasis on the factors limiting active involvement of young people in democratic governance and political decision-making. Despite the return of democratic rule in 1999 and the significant population of youths in Nigeria, their participation in politics remained relatively low during the period under review. The study investigated major obstacles such as poverty, unemployment, political violence, electoral malpractice, godfatherism, inadequate political education, corruption, and the dominance of older political elites in the political system. The research also assessed the extent to which these challenges affected youth representation in elective and appointive positions. Data for the study were gathered through secondary sources including textbooks, journals, newspapers, government publications, and internet materials. The study adopted a descriptive and analytical method of analysis. Findings revealed that Nigerian youths were often marginalized in political processes despite their numerical strength and contribution to national development. It further showed that high nomination fees, lack of financial resources, and limited access to political structures discouraged many youths from contesting political offices. The study concluded that meaningful youth participation is essential for democratic consolidation, political stability, and national development in Nigeria. It therefore recommended increased political inclusion of youths, implementation of youth-friendly policies, reduction of barriers to political participation, political enlightenment programs, and strengthening of democratic institutions to encourage active youth involvement in governance.
