Abstract

The study investigated the synthesis and evaluation of thermodynamic parameters of Fe (III) and Co (II) complexes of thiosemicarbazide derivatives using standard analytic methods. Ligands were sourced from a standard chemical laboratory, synthesized, and characterized using UV-spectrophotometer for absorbance, electrical conductivity meter for molar conductivity of the complexes, FTIR for the spectra of functional groups in the metal complexes and thermal conductor were used to determine the thermogravimetric properties of the complexes. Findings of the study shows a positive Gibb’s free energy (ΔG) of Co (II) and Fe (III) complexes and this indicates that the process required of Co (II) and Fe (III) decomposition requires high amount of energy to proceed and hence is considered a non-spontaneous process,. The study also showed positive values of enthalpy (ΔH) implying that enthalpy is the driving force for the decomposition of the metal complexes in the study and a negative values of entropy (ΔS) which indicates the degree of disorder of the products formed by the dissociations of the bonds is lower than that of the initial reactants (ligands and their complexes). The low entropy values obtained for Fe (III) and Co (II) showed that only certain physical and chemical changes occur in the complexes during decomposition or degradation.
