Abstract

The conduct of credible elections is fundamental to sustaining democracy, yet Nigeria continues to face significant challenges in this regard. This study assesses the challenges confronting the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in conducting free, fair, and credible elections in Nigeria. Relying on both primary and secondary sources, the research identifies key issues such as logistical problems, inadequate funding, insecurity, political interference, electoral violence, weak institutional capacity, and low voter education as critical obstacles to INEC’s effectiveness. Findings reveal that these challenges not only undermine the credibility of elections but also erode public trust in democratic institutions. The study concludes that strengthening INEC’s autonomy, improving funding mechanisms, leveraging technology, enhancing security, and promoting civic education are vital to ensuring credible electoral processes. The research therefore provides relevant recommendations for policymakers, stakeholders, and civil society groups committed to deepening democracy in Nigeria
