Abstract

This study examined the psychological impact of public recognition on leadership performance at Yobe State University, Damaturu, Yobe State, Nigeria. The research aimed to assess existing recognition practices for leaders, evaluate their psychological influence on motivation and job satisfaction, and determine the relationship between public recognition and leadership performance. A quantitative survey research design was adopted. The study population comprised 219 junior administrative staff of the university, from which a sample size of 142 respondents was determined using Yamane’s formula. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Pearson Product- Moment Correlation technique to establish relationships between variables. Findings revealed that public recognition significantly influences leadership effectiveness by enhancing morale, motivation, and commitment among leaders. Recognized leaders demonstrated higher job satisfaction and better performance compared to those who were not publicly acknowledged. A positive and statistically significant correlation was found between public recognition and leadership performance, confirming that recognition serves as a strong non-financial motivator in the workplace. The study concludes that public recognition improves leadership performance by satisfying psychological needs such as esteem and belongingness. It recommends that university management institutionalize formal recognition programmes to encourage effective leadership, sustain motivation, and promote organizational productivity
