PHYCHEMICAL QUANTIFICATION AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF ETHANOL EXTRACT OF LEAVES OF HIBISCUS SADBARIFFA VAR ALTISSIMA FROM DUTSIN-MA TOWN
Abstract
This study investigated the phytochemical constituents and antioxidant activity of ethanol extract of leaves of Hibiscus sabdariffa var. altissima collected from Dutsin-Ma Town, Katsina State, Nigeria. Fresh leaves were harvested, washed, shade-dried, pulverized, and extracted using ethanol through maceration. Qualitative and quantitative phytochemical analyses were conducted to determine the presence and concentration of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, phenolics, and glycosides. Antioxidant activity was evaluated using the DPPH free radical scavenging assay. The results revealed the presence of significant phytochemicals with flavonoids and phenolic compounds occurring in appreciable quantities. The ethanol extract exhibited considerable antioxidant activity, indicating its ability to neutralize free radicals. The findings suggest that Hibiscus sabdariffa var. altissima leaves possess bioactive compounds that may contribute to therapeutic and pharmaceutical applications. The study recommends further investigations into the isolation and characterization of active compounds for drug development.
