YOUTH BULGE AND NATIONAL SECURITY IN OTUKPO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF BENUE STATE, 2015-2023
Abstract
This study examined the impact of the youth bulge on national security in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State, Nigeria, between 2015 and 2023. The research was motivated by the growing concerns over youth unemployment and its contribution to insecurity in Nigeria. The study adopted a qualitative research design, utilizing secondary data sourced from books, journals, government publications, and other relevant documents. Findings revealed that the youth bulge in Otukpo significantly strained local resources, increased unemployment rates, and contributed to various forms of insecurity, including youth restiveness, violent crimes, and political instability. The research further discovered that while some strategies had been implemented by the Benue State government, such as skill acquisition programs and youth empowerment schemes, these measures were largely inadequate and poorly coordinated. The study concluded that unless urgent, comprehensive, and youth-centered policies are adopted and implemented at all levels of government, the challenges posed by the youth bulge will continue to threaten national security. It recommended the creation of sustainable employment opportunities, improved access to quality education and vocational training, increased youth participation in governance, and the implementation of well-funded, strategic youth development programs. These measures, if properly executed, would help harness the potential of the youth population and promote lasting peace and security in the region.
