SCHOOL INFRASTRUCTURE AND STUDENT CLASS ATTENDANCE IN ADEKUNLE AJASIN UNIVERSITY AKUNGBA AKOKO
Abstract
The study investigated the effect of School Infrastructure on student class attendance in Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba-Akoko, Ondo state. The population of the study comprises two thousand seven hundred and fifty five (22,755) undergraduate of AAUA.
A proportionate sampling technique was used to select three hundred and ninety three (393) student from ten faculties within the campus. A descriptive survey research design was employed. A self-designed questions were used to collect data for the study.
Data were analyzed using frequency, mean, percentage. Results revealed that Students strongly agree that adequate transportation services such as shuttle buses, good road networks, and reliable campus transportation significantly improve class attendance and punctuality, while high transportation costs are a notable barrier. Students perceive current ICT facilities, including computers, internet access, and online learning platforms, as inadequate, but believe improved ICT would positively influence class attendance. Students report dissatisfaction with lecture theater ventilation, illumination, and overall conduciveness, yet agree that better-equipped theaters would significantly boost attendance. Students agree that available, clean, well-maintained, and functional restrooms near lecture halls encourage attendance, but find current restroom facilities in academic buildings inadequate. In line with the findings of this study, the study recommend investing in expanding and subsidizing campus shuttle services to reduce transportation costs and improve reliability, ensuring regular schedules and coverage to key academic areas. Allocating resources to improve access to computers, reliable internet, and user-friendly online learning platforms, addressing the perceived inadequacy of ICT infrastructure. Prioritizing upgrades to lecture theater ventilation, lighting, and overall conduciveness to create an environment that supports learning and encourages attendance. Increasing the number of clean, well-maintained, and functional restrooms near lecture halls to address inadequacy and promote student retention on campus. Expanding university hostel capacity to reduce overcrowding and develop accommodations closer to academic areas, while supporting off-campus students with shuttle services to mitigate distance barriers.
