Abstract

Gentamicin, a widely used aminoglycoside antibiotic, is known for its nephrotoxic side effects, which can also lead to alterations in haematological parameters (Ali, 2001). This study investigated the potential modulatory effects of aqueous extract of Paragis (Eleusine indica) on haematological indices in Wistar rats subjected to gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity. Twenty adult male rats were randomly divided into four groups: a normal control, a gentamicin-only group, and two treatment groups receiving gentamicin along with low and high doses of Paragis extract, respectively. Following a 7-day treatment period, blood samples were analyzed to assess changes in key haematological markers such as white blood cell (WBC) count, hemoglobin concentration (Hb), packed cell volume (PCV), and differential leukocyte counts. The results showed that gentamicin administration led to a decrease in WBC and Hb levels, indicating immunosuppression and potential anemia (Ali, 2003; Walker & Shah, 1987). However, co-administration of Paragis extract, particularly at higher doses, significantly improved these parameters, suggesting a restorative or protective effect on blood function. These findings align with previous reports on the medicinal value of Eleusine indica, which is known to contain bioactive compounds with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and hematopoietic properties (Olorunfemi et al., 2012; Akinmoladun et al., 2010). The observed improvements in haematological indices support the traditional use of Paragis in managing kidney and blood-related ailments. Further studies are recommended to isolate the active phytochemicals and explore their mechanisms of action.
