THE EFFECT OF ELECTRONIC ACCREDITATION OF VOTERS ON DEMOCRATIC CONSOLIDATION IN NIGERIA: A CASE STUDY OF 2023 GENERAL ELECTION IN YOBE STATE
Abstract
This study examined the effect of electronic accreditation of voters on democratic consolidation in Nigeria, with particular reference to the 2023 general election in Yobe State. The study assessed how the introduction of electronic accreditation through the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) has improved electoral transparency, reduced irregularities, and enhanced the credibility of elections. The research adopted a quantitative method, using questionnaires distributed across Damaturu, Potiskum, and Damagum. The findings revealed that electronic accreditation has significantly contributed to improving voter confidence and strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process. The study concluded that effective deployment of electronic accreditation technologies can enhance democratic consolidation if adequately supported by training, logistics, and security. Recommendations were made for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to strengthen technical support and voter education to maximize the benefits of e-accreditation.
