THE IMPACT OF MULTIPLE TAXATION ON BUSINESSES IN NIGERIA
Abstract
This study examines the impact of multiple taxation on businesses in Nigeria. Multiple taxation has become a major challenge affecting the growth and survival of businesses, especially small and medium-scale enterprises. The study investigates the causes, effects, and possible solutions to the problem of multiple taxation in Nigeria. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, textbooks, journals, and online materials. The findings revealed that multiple taxation increases the cost of doing business, reduces business profits, discourages investment, and contributes to the closure of many businesses. The study also discovered that poor tax administration, lack of coordination among government agencies, and excessive revenue generation policies are major causes of multiple taxation. The research concludes that multiple taxation negatively affects business development and economic growth in Nigeria. The study recommends tax reforms, proper coordination among tax authorities, and reduction in unnecessary taxes to promote a better business environment.
