PROPOSED AZMAN UNIVERSITY LIBRARY, KANO STATE (UNIVERSAL DESIGN STRATEGIES FOR ENHANCING ACCESSIBILITY AND INCLUSIVITY IN LARGE ACADEMIC LIBRARIES)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This project presents the Proposed Azman University Library, Kano, developed with a focus on Universal Design (UD) strategies to enhance accessibility and inclusivity within large academic libraries. As modern universities expand, the demand for library environments that accommodate diverse users—including persons with disabilities, elderly individuals, neurodivergent users, and the general student population—has become increasingly critical. This research investigates the role of Universal Design in addressing accessibility gaps commonly found in Nigerian academic libraries and applies these principles to the architectural and landscape design of the proposed facility.
The study reviewed relevant literature on Universal Design, accessibility standards, and library planning, particularly within the Nigerian context. It identified key barriers affecting users, such as inadequate circulation systems, limited assistive infrastructure, poor wayfinding, and insufficient climate-responsive design. Using these findings, the project proposes a comprehensive design approach integrating step-free access, multi-sensory wayfinding, inclusive reading spaces, accessible vertical circulation, assistive technologies, and culturally responsive features. Additionally, the landscape design incorporates shaded outdoor reading areas, tactile-guided pathways, climate-adapted vegetation, and social learning spaces that support inclusivity and comfort.
The proposed design demonstrates how Universal Design can be effectively applied to improve user experience, strengthen social equity, and create a learning environment that supports all individuals regardless of physical, sensory, or cognitive ability. By addressing accessibility from both architectural and landscape perspectives, this project contributes to ongoing efforts to promote inclusive educational infrastructure in Kano and Nigeria at large.
