Abstract

The upgrade of the solar-powered system at the Mechanical Engineering offices of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUSTECH), Wudil, was systematically designed based on a detailed service load analysis, solar panel capacity determination, battery storage requirements, charge controller sizing, and inverter selection. The existing system, delivering only 240 W against a designed capacity of 1000 W, was upgraded to reliably supply a total load of 1 kW, comprising fans (150 W), laptops (130 W), lighting (120 W), and printers (150 W), operating for approximately 3 hours daily. High-efficiency monocrystalline solar PV modules, lithium-ion battery storage, an inverter, and a charge controller were selected to ensure optimal performance. The upgraded system was successfully installed, tested, and commissioned, achieving the target output of 1000 W under local solar irradiance conditions of 5.8 kWh/m²/day. The solar panels were strategically mounted on the rooftop to maximize sunlight exposure. This sustainable off-grid solution significantly enhances operational reliability, reduces dependence on the erratic national grid, eliminates diesel generator usage, and aligns with Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan and global sustainability goals. The system ensures uninterrupted power supply for office functions, improves staff productivity, and serves as a model for renewable energy adoption in academic institutions.
