Abstract

Directors play a pivotal role in shaping theatrical productions by integrating artistic vision with practical execution. However, various constraints such as resource limitations, institutional pressures, and collaborative dynamics often impede the full realization of a director's creative identity. This study examines the challenges faced by directors in expressing their creative signatures, focusing on Muhammed-Kabir’s production of A Mirage for a Dream staged at Prince Abubakar Audu University Arts Theatre. Grounded in the Auteur Theory, which views the director as the principal creative force in a production, the study explores how Muhammed-Kabir navigated these challenges to imprint his artistic vision. Utilizing qualitative research methods, including interviews, the research investigates the interplay between Muhammed-Kabir's directorial choices and the practical realities of staging the play. Findings reveal that while Muhammed-Kabir’s directorial vision was evident in his thematic focus and stylistic decisions, factors such as limited resources and institutional constraints affected the overall execution. The study highlights the critical role of adaptability and collaborative strategies in overcoming such challenges. It also underscores the importance of adopting mentorship-based directing approaches and implementing academic-friendly rehearsal schedules, especially in educational theatre contexts. By situating the analysis within the broader discourse of theatre directing and creative expression, this research provides insights into the complexities directors face in balancing artistic aspirations with practical demands.
