Abstract

This study investigates the influence of cryptocurrency mining on Chemistry Education students and its implications on their learning behaviour in Northwest University, Kano. The increasing involvement of students in cryptocurrency mining, driven by financial incentives and technological curiosity, has raised concerns about its impact on academic engagement and performance. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The target population comprised undergraduate Chemistry Education students across different levels, from which a sample size of 278 respondents was selected using appropriate sampling techniques. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire, and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings revealed that a significant proportion of students are actively involved in cryptocurrency mining, with male students showing higher participation than their female counterparts. The study further indicated that excessive engagement in mining activities negatively affects students’ learning behaviour, leading to poor time management, reduced concentration during lectures, and lower academic performance. However, some positive outcomes were identified, including improved technological skills and increased awareness of digital financial systems. The study concludes that while cryptocurrency mining offers certain benefits, its negative implications on students’ academic activities cannot be overlooked. It is therefore recommended that universities should organize awareness programs and introduce time management strategies to help students balance academic responsibilities with non-academic engagements.
