Abstract

This study was carried out to isolate and identify bacteria present in wastewater from the modern abattoir in Damaturu with the aim of determining the bacteriological quality of the effluent and its possible public health implications. Wastewater generated from abattoir activities contains large quantities of organic matter and microorganisms which may contaminate the environment and pose serious health risks if discharged untreated. Samples of wastewater were collected from different points within the abattoir environment using sterile containers and transported to the laboratory for microbiological analysis. Standard bacteriological methods were employed for the isolation and identification of bacteria. Serial dilution and culture techniques were carried out using appropriate media, while Gram staining and biochemical tests were used for characterization and identification of the bacterial isolates. The results revealed the presence of several bacterial species associated with wastewater contamination, including Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella spp., Klebsiella spp., and Pseudomonas spp. The occurrence of these organisms indicated a high level of microbial contamination in the wastewater, which may arise from animal wastes, blood, intestinal contents, and poor sanitary conditions within the abattoir. The study further showed that untreated abattoir wastewater could serve as a source of environmental pollution and transmission of pathogenic microorganisms to humans and animals. The presence of coliform bacteria especially Escherichia coli suggests possible fecal contamination and poor hygienic practices in the handling and disposal of abattoir wastes. It was concluded that wastewater from the Damaturu modern abattoir contains potentially harmful bacteria capable of causing infections and environmental hazards. Therefore, proper treatment and disposal of abattoir wastewater, regular sanitation practices, and strict monitoring by environmental and public health authorities are recommended to reduce contamination and protect public health.
