Abstract

This study investigates the neuro sedative activity of Bridelia ferruginea, Datura innoxia, and Thorn Apple, plants traditionally used in the Eastern Senatorial District of Kogi State,Nigeria Phytochemical analyses revealed significant concentrations of neuroactive compounds in each plant, contributing to their sedative effects. Bridelia ferruginea exhibited high levels of saponins(+++), known for their calming properties, with moderate amounts of flavonolds(++)..glycosides(++). alkaloids(++).,and terpenoids(++)..all contributing to its neuro sedative potential. Datura innaxia showed high concentrations of saponins(+++)and terpenoids(+++).,moderate levels of glycosides(++)and alkaloids (++).with low amounts of flavonoids (+) and tannins (+), indicating a complex synergy of compounds responsible for its traditional sedative use. Thorn Apple displayed a robust profile with high concentrations of tannins(+++).glycosides(+++),alkaloids(+++).and terpenolds(+++),alongside moderate levels of saponins(++)..but lacked flavonoids (-).suggesting a potent neuro sedative composition. The absence or low concentration of certain compounds like flavonoids in Datura innaxia and Thor Apple further underscores the specificity of the ir sedative effects. This study validates the traditional use of these plants in the management of neurological conditions, offering insights into their potential therapeutic applications for anxsiety, insomnia, and related disorders.
