EFFECT OF DIFFERENT LEVELS OF RICE STRAW MULCH ON WEED CONTROL AND MAIZE (ZEA MAYS L.) PERFORMANCE IN JALINGO
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The project was conducted at Nukkai irrigation Teaching and Research Farm of crop science
Department, College of Agriculture Jalingo to examine the effect of different level of rice straw mulch
on weed control and yield of maize. The experiment consisted of five treatments (control, 2 tonnes/ha,
4 tonnes/ha, 6 tonnes/ha and 8 tonnes/ha) and were laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design
and three replications. The results revealed that 8 tonnes/ha rice straw mulch significantly reduced
weed density and weed biomass and improved general performance of maize than 6 tonnes/ha, 4
tonnes/ha, 2 tonnes/ha and control in that order. Vegetative yield were significantly lower in control but
weed density and weed biomass statistically were higher
