Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examined community leaders’ perception on climate change in Damaturu Local Government Area of Yobe State. The primary objective was to assess the level of awareness, understanding, and attitudes of community leaders toward the causes, effects, and mitigation of climate change. A total of 200 respondents were selected using a stratified random sampling technique from various wards across Damaturu L.G.A, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth leaders, and women leaders. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, and mean scores. The findings revealed that most community leaders are aware of climate change and have noticed significant environmental changes such as increased temperature, irregular rainfall patterns, drought, and desert encroachment. However, the study also found that while awareness levels were high, detailed scientific understanding of the causes and adaptation strategies remained limited. Many leaders attributed climate change primarily to human activities such as deforestation and poor waste management, while others linked it to natural phenomena or divine will. The study concluded that community leaders play a crucial role in promoting local adaptation and environmental sustainability but require more knowledge and training to effectively mobilize their communities. It therefore recommended that government agencies, NGOs, and environmental experts intensify awareness campaigns, capacity-building programs, and community-based adaptation initiatives targeting local leaders to enhance their involvement in combating climate change in Damaturu and beyond. Keywords: Climate Change, Community Leaders, Perception, Awareness, Adaptation, Damaturu L.G.A.
